Returning to School - Last Quarter

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On March 2, Public Health Madison and Dane County (PHMDC) issued Order #14 which included changes to requirements related to public and private schools in Dane County. A copy of that order can be found here. That order became effective, March 10, at 12:01 a.m.

Public Health Madison and Dane County has now issued 14 orders dating back to May 13, 2020. All orders included requirements related to school operations that have had an impact on the planning and implementation of school operations. We know there will be at least two more orders issued by PHMDC prior to the end of this school year. Many times, these orders have required our staff and parents / caregivers to pivot quickly and adapt. Thank you for all of your patience and understanding throughout this entire year.

This communication will detail our plans for the 4th quarter for elementary schools. Changes will take place starting Tuesday, April 13. You can access this information here. You will receive school-specific information from your child’s principal in the coming days. Please note that although there isn’t a separate section for Pre-K, the current plan for Pre-K remains the same. Unless there are future orders or requirements from PHMDC that prevent implementation, this will be our final plan for the year for elementary students

For middle and high school students, we anticipate the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will soon be issuing new guidance and recommendations on social distancing from the current six feet to three feet.  When that new guidance is issued, as soon as possible but not before Tuesday, April 13, option 1 students (those who chose to return to in-person instruction when permitted) will be able to attend in-person Tuesday - Friday. In the meantime, we will continue with our current hybrid (WILD / CATS) schedule and concurrent instructional model until further notice. Option 2 students will continue in their current virtual only classrooms for the remainder of the school year. All other mitigation plans will remain in place including masking, handwashing, cleaning protocols, and directional routing of students.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this important information. Again, this will be the final elementary school change for the 2020 - 2021 school year unless there is a material change in Order #14 that prohibits us from implementing this plan. Please look for updated information on the final middle and high school schedule soon after the CDC updates its guidance and recommendations.

Thank you so much for your support of our students and staff throughout this pandemic. I wish you and all your family and extended family the best through the end of this school year.

Kind regards,

Dean Gorrell

VASD Superintendent
